Black Bean Brownies-A Review
I had planned to have butternut squash raviolis for dinner tonight. I was going to make Shaun and Lu some chicken to go with them and I was just going to eat the raviolis. They were meat free and dairy free-I thought I was golden. Turns out they had egg :(
The plan of attack right now is to be super nice to my tummy and then to slowly add stuff back in to see what I can and can’t eat. Since I’m still in that “being super nice to my tummy” stage, I thought it would be better to steer clear of the eggs for tonight. Instead of feeling like, poor, pitiful me I decided to embrace my tummy and make myself some of Happy Herbivore’s Black Bean Brownies. Beans are supposedly okay if they are blended well, and they are in this recipe. Plus the twitter world is all abuzz over these things.
I got all the ingredients out:
Yep, that’s all of them. Plopped them in the food processor:
Processed it up:
I tasted the batter at this point, and The Happy Herbivore was right, it doesn’t taste like black beans-not one bit.
Ready to go in the oven:
Just out of the oven:
Completely cooled and cut:
And topped with banana ice “cream”:
The verdict? It was good…but not brownie like. The cinnamon makes them decidedly not brownie like. It’s more like a Mexican Chocolate cake. You can also definitely tell that it’s not made with flour-you wouldn’t guess beans though.
Would I make them again? Yes-with a little less cinnamon though. I may just make them again to eat the batter-yum.
Would Shaun eat them? “Not with a ten foot poll” he says.
They ARE a pretty great and fun way to get some protein in!

ok that is just strange! I am intrigued though!
yikes, kinda scary i must admit 🙂 if you say they’re OK then they’re worth trying!
I haven’t seen these anywhere yet, but I made black bean brownies about 10 years ago when I was first into health. I remember they were super duper dense- were these the same?
thank you for making them — I’m glad you enjoyed and your demonstration was just LOVELY! I esp love the ingredients picture. I’ll have to link this post on the show, I think its gorgeous and helpful == I hope you feel better soon too.
The brownies look yummy.
I made white bean cookies once and they were good as well- and you definitely couldn’t tell that beans were involved.
I saw these on Dr Oz last week. He couldn’t get the secret ingredient. Did Shaun try them and not like them or he won’t try them because he knows they’ve got black beans?
Ooooh you should NOT have told Shaun. That’s the only way I can get Chris to try ANYTHING new. The less they know, the better. LOL
Aaron hates Cinnamon (weird I know) so I would have been screwed from the get go. I may try them for myself or better yet take them to massage class for everyone to try out. My teacher would like these.
You made the final product look AMAZING. I want to lick my computer every time I see that frozen banana…
I made 101cookbooks version of black bean brownies and they were really good. I have been thinking about making this version but I would leave out the cinnamon for sure. I am not a fan of chocolate and cinnamon together.
Interesting… very interesting!! hehe…
Thinking about these more, I think that I liked the batter more than the final product. When I make them again, I’m going to use more oats or add some flour to see if that makes the consistency of the finished product a little more cake like.
Sabrina-they were dense-kinda like fudge. I’m still struggling with how to describe them.
Happy Herbivore-I’m glad you like the pics-I was a little sad that they came out blurry, but then get the job done 🙂
Brittany-I am INTRIGUED with the idea of white bean cookies!
Cyn-I DID get Shaun to have a bite and he didn’t like them BUT he also really HATES bananas so I’m not surprised.
Ashley-I didn’t tell Shaun what they were made with and he still said that-he’s so picky!
Bethany-frozen banana is GOOD.
Christie-I may try the 101cookbooks version without the butter though.
I think what I liked MOST about the recipe is how EASY it was. It was SUPER simple and it’s made ME want to play around with beans in baked goods 🙂
[…] Black Bean Brownies-A Review […]
hello! just found your blog. Black Bean Brownies…. now that’s one I haven’t heard of before. I don`t even know if I would want to make that
interesting! i have heard a lot about adding beans to ready-made brownie mix (probably more my non-baking speed). but yes, at least you have a protein packed treat!
I’ve been doing the homemade bread thing for awhile and the book I use that has most of my recipes talks a lot about using beans to fortify recipes. It adds ridiculous protein and doesn’t mess with the flavor. So I’m pretty excited to see this recipe and to try it sometime. Adding it to my recipe file. Thank you!
That’s a good description of the taste… Mexican chocolate. I was so focused on how un-brownie like they were that I was shocked when my boyfriend walked into the room and raved about how good they were. And they ARE quite good!
