Just Eat Local!

July 12th, 2010 — 1:13pm

I’m headed to Virginia on business (I’m on the plane as I write!) and the rule in our house is that I’m not allowed to cook the day before a trip.  It always stresses me out and I sort of turn into a monster.  Me?! Really?!?  Yes, really.

We’ve cut WAY back on spending since moving and haven’t been out since we got here.  I think that’s a record for us. Thankfully, Shaun’s awesome mountain bike buddies gave us a gift certificate to a local ale house that just so happens to specialize in local food-a match made in heaven for Shaun and I.

IMG_7022

We drove the 2 miles to the restaurant since it was 100 degrees out.  I can see us easily biking or walking in more moderate weather 🙂

Here are my 2 favorite people walking up to the Bitter Creek Ale House:

IMG_6991

They have a great sign:

IMG_6992

With an awesome garden outside:

IMG_6994

Once inside, it definitely looked like a comfy bar:

IMG_6995 IMG_6996 IMG_6998

They are serious about selling local!

IMG_6999
IMG_7004

Shaun got an amber larger (I didn’t note which one):

IMG_7001

Since beer has gluten and I’m not a big fan anyway, I got a frou-frou cocktail that was made with lemon, herbal tea, and local vodka:

IMG_7008

Super YOM!

It had an awesome little metal spoon straw (that was quickly bogarted by Lu):

IMG_7013

Shaun got some chips and salsa to start:

IMG_7014

The salsa was made on the premises with local fruits and veggies.  It was SPICY!  We like spice and this was a little much for us.  I didn’t have any chips but had a few fork fulls of salsa.  HOT!

I got a hummus plate for Lu and I to share:

IMG_7015

The hummus had goat cheese (which I can tolerate!), kalamata olives, and cucumber.  It needed salt but was really good.  I got it more to top my salad than anything else :)  Lu LOVED the pita bread.

For my entree, I got the spicy lamb burger (hold the bun) with an undressed side salad (hello hummus!).  It too was topped with goat cheese.  It also had fresh jalapeño and crispy onions (that I forgot to ask for them to leave off-the “crispy” is gluten FULL-I picked them off and gave them to Lu).

IMG_7018

It was DELISH!  The pickles were awesome too.  I saved them for last.

Shaun got what he always gets if it’s on the menu, Fish and Chips with Pacific Cod:

IMG_7019

He said it was delicious!  Lu liked the chips and the cabbage too.  (She wasn’t so in to my lamb).

Since they had such an extensive beer list, I asked if they had a gluten free beer and what do you know-they did!  I don’t know what got into me, but I ordered one:

IMG_7020

I usually HATE the aftertaste of beer.  I love the way beer tastes right as it hits my lips but then once it’s down my throat I HATE IT.  Guess what?  I LOVED THIS.  None of that nasty aftertaste.  I wonder if my body was reacting to my allergy?  I can’t wait to have this beer again.

We loved our experience at Bitter Creek.  Shaun commented “That is real pub food!” and yet they had MULTIPLE items on the menu that I could eat too.  And? It’s mostly ALL LOCAL.  Which is awesome!  We got all of that for under $50-can you believe it?!?!

We will definitely be back.  They have a Tasting Tuesday series every Tuesday and I’m sure Shaun would LOVE to go.  The fact that we can take Lucy (until 10 PM) is a major plus too.

There was NOTHING like this in San Mateo.  Maybe in San Francisco (30 minutes away) but 10 minutes away? Nope.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE Boise lately?

~~~~~
In other news, I heard today that our stuff will be delivered Friday!!!!  FINALLY.  They owe us a BUNCH of money now but at least it’s going to be here.  Let’s hope it’s all in one piece.
In Celebration of Reagan
July 10th, 2010 — 7:02pm
In the past I’ve mentioned the online Moms group that I’m a part of.  We “met” at Baby Center back in February 2008 when we were all celebrating our BFPs. A large group of us moved to a different site but we think of all the October 2008 Babies as part of our “group”.  We’ve become extraordinarily close and I count these women as some of my closest friends and allies.  We are an amazing group of women who support each other every step of the way.
This week, tragedy hit.  One of the Mom’s that we met on Baby Center and who many of us have kept in contact with through Facebook had a Mother’s worst nightmare happen.  Her baby who was born March 14, 2010 (her October baby’s little sister), died suddenly on Tuesday.
Reagan’s memorial was today and we decided to release purple balloons or plant purple flowers in her honor.  Many also wore purple in Reagan’s honor today.  Janea, we’re here for you.
Baby Reagan.
image
We planted flowers this morning.  Since we don’t have any gardening tools, we had to use Lu’s sand shovels-I thought it was fitting.  As we planted these, I told Lu why and we said “goodbye” to Baby Reagan.
Will it EVER Wear Off?
July 8th, 2010 — 7:26am
My complete HIGH from our move?  I LOVE it here.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!  I hope this feeling never goes away.
I went for my first run on Tuesday.  Here’s the trail that is literally 100 feet from my backyard:
image
image
image
I do have to start climbing some of the foothills once I get past about a mile but that’s fantastic too!
This trail also takes us to the park:
image
That’s about 10 minutes away, 20 minutes if Lucy is “walking”-i.e. picking up rocks, chasing butterflies (and saying “pretty butterflies”), etc.
image
I took her yesterday for my “lunch hour” and she was so cute.  She LOVED this fire truck and thought it was REALLY cool when the boys jumped in the back and she got to “drive” them.  According to the boys, Lu was Princess Leia.
image
In other ridiculously cute Lu news, she was home with me yesterday while I worked.  I was on the phone with my manager for my weekly meeting when she comes strolling out in this hat from my closet:
image
She picked it out and put it on herself-it totally matches.  She wore it for a good 45 minutes.
Like my living room? HA!  My sister is letting us borrow those chairs for right now and while I’m working, Lu has free reign, hence the bears, cd (we gave that one to her as a toy-no worries it does NOT go to the Netflix that you see in the distance), Netflix paper, etc. on the floor.
She has definitely hit the “terrible twos”.  WOW.  She’s awesome and sweet as always BUT can she ever throw a fit when she doesn’t get her way.  We NEVER give in, so I’m wondering when our persistence is going to pay off?  Hopefully it will!
It’s nice being home with her more often.  She does have a sitter that comes either to my house or my sister’s house but I see her SO MUCH MORE.  She is loving having a backyard and going “ow-sigh!!!”  We did sidewalk chalk the other day and she thought it was “Cool” to color outside.
IMG_6914
IMG_6915
Every night, before bed, she runs through the hose and get’s a “hose shower”.
We’ve also been eating outside almost everyday.  Our grill has already paid for itself!!!
Life is grand :)  I hope it NEVER wears off.
Where’s My Stuff?!?!?!
July 7th, 2010 — 4:08pm
Not here anytime soon :(.  I just got this back from my contact at Mayflower:
I just spoke with the regional planner at Mayflower Transit and unfortunately they do not have any driver planned on your shipment yet. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. I will continue monitoring your shipment and contact you about the driver assignment as soon as it happens.
Isn’t that just awesome?!?!?
As a reminder, they picked everything up on June 25th and we were “guaranteed” that it would arrive by July 2nd.
I’m looking at it as a break from packing :)  My move is also getting much cheaper!  At this rate, they’ll be paying ME!
I Need HELP!!!
July 6th, 2010 — 7:28pm
I’ve been in a mild state of panic ever since arriving at the new house.  It’s huge and nice and everything I imagined BUT the kitchen has VERY little storage space.  I’m freaking out and trying to figure out what to do.  I came from a kitchen that had 26 cupboards and 9 drawers.  This kitchen has 8 cupboards and 3 drawers. I know that if I lived in New York, this would be a ton of space.  I don’t live in New York and I don’t know how anything is going to fit!
I thought I’d show you the space constraints and tell you my ideas and see if anyone has any clever ideas.
So remember my cute kitchen?
image
Well, it doesn’t have much space.
First there’s the open shelf…Lucy has claimed it as her own:
IMG_6899
She put all of that there.  I don’t foresee being able to use the shelf for anything.
Next up we have my one, yes one, large drawer:
IMG_6900
There are 2 other small drawers in the entire kitchen:
IMG_6905IMG_6908
I have this cupboard:
IMG_6901
That thankfully rolls out:
IMG_6902
Then there’s the cupboards on the other side of the stove.
IMG_6903 IMG_6904
Cupboard and drawer by the sink (sorry for the blur):
IMG_6906
A little ledge above the sink:
IMG_6909
A lazy susan (that I’d like to keep my kitchen appliances in-food gets lost):
IMG_6910
And my last 3 cupboards:
IMG_6911
Dishes will go here:
IMG_6912
Interesting shelf that doesn’t fit many non-perishable items (unless they are in cans):
IMG_6913
While I was doing the dishes tonight, I decided to record a video (on my phone) so that you could get a feel for how limited I am. (it’s about 4 minutes long)
And you get to hear my voice (and my bird scream).
Our thoughts are that we will put a pot rack/shelf, like this:
image  (source)
on the wall, in between the fridge and sink (above the awesome new trash can). I’ll then use the roll out cupboard for things like mixing bowls, glass storage containers, breakable things as I can get a non-damaging child lock (like the one on the kitchen sink) for this cupboard.
If you watched the video, you know that I’m planning on using my upstairs closet as a pantry which will free up the lazy susan for larger appliances.
Where do I put my spices?  Where do I put my cooking utensils?  Where do I put my kitchen towels and pot holders?  ACK!
Thoughts? Ideas? HELP?
Fourth of July BBQ Take Two!
July 4th, 2010 — 8:52pm
We decided to have everyone who has been hosting us over for a BBQ.
IMG_6878
I made a Carne Asada feast!  With limited kitchen supplies it surprisingly turned out really well!  The girls liked it!
IMG_6876
Here’s the gluten and dairy free version:
IMG_6879
-Bed of lettuce
-Carne Asada
-Rice
– Black Beans
-Salsa
Tapatio
-Un-pictured yummy guacamole, courtesy of the wonderful Aunt Megan!
The others had flour tortillas, cheese, and sour cream.
Our $25 grill from Craigslist, did it’s job!
image
After dinner, the boys moved my $15 Craigslist desk (can you tell we’re LOVING Craigslist?) into my office.  It was heavy!!!
Dropping it:
IMG_6886
Getting it up the step!
IMG_6888
Well, maybe…
IMG_6889
It made it!
IMG_6890
I LOVE my old school, metal desk-it’s exactly what I wanted.  I just need to get some Goo Gone (oh wait, I have a gallon sitting in San Francisco) to clean it well.
While the guys moved the desk, Lu, Megan, and I played “cheese” (taking pictures of Lu while she tries to put the lens cap on my camera).
Happy Fourth!
July 4th, 2010 — 11:18am
IMG_6746
Blueberry oatmeal with farmer’s market raspberries and strawberries.  Topped with my sister’s GF banana bread and almond butter.
Yesterday was the epitome of a perfect day for me.  I met my sister and we walked down to the farmer’s market and got some great local produce.  After shopping, we ran into a parade.  I didn’t have my camera but it was cool!  The bagpipers and old fire engines were the highlight.  (Crappy phone pictures)
image
image
A random parade is not something I would have found in San Mateo!  After the parade we took the girls to the park where they had a blast! (I was so bummed I forgot my camera).
In the afternoon, we went over to my old college roommate (and good friend) Megan’s house for a BBQ.  I’ve written about Megan and Luke before. I am so excited that Megan and Luke live here!  And?  Luke and Shaun will be working together.  How awesome is that?  Shaun starts work on Tuesday and I imagine that we’ll be seeing a lot of Megan and Luke. YAY!
They had set up a table out in their backyard, in the shade.
IMG_6720
With beautiful flowers from their garden.
IMG_6722IMG_6723
And yummy appetizers!
IMG_6724
Lu had a great time running around the backyard.
IMG_6726
Dinner was served!
IMG_6729
Chicken, steak, fish, grilled veggies and rice salad. YOM.
After dinner Lu went for a swing in the hammock.
IMG_6733
IMG_6734
Lucy LOVED Aunt Megan.  Lu is pretty shy and takes time to warm up to people.  NOT MEGAN.  She was like Megan’s shadow and couldn’t get enough of her.  Megan is a teacher and is going to be a great Mommy (around Christmas!).
Megan had picked up some fireworks for Lu and we were unsure how she’d react.  What do you think she thought of them?
IMG_6737 IMG_6738 IMG_6739 IMG_6740
She kept asking for “Mo! Mo! Mo!”  It was very sweet.
At the end of the night, Lu christened Megan and Luke’s new tub-they just got a fantastic bathroom remodel and Lu had a popsicle that got all over.
Before we left, Lu gave Aunt Megan a huge hug.
We’ve made the right decision 😉
~~~~~

Yes, that is a plastic bowl and a spoon of Lucy’s up there in the first picture of my morning oatmeal.  Our stuff isn’t here :(.  It was supposed to be here by July 2nd at the latest but it is now sitting in San Francisco.  They can’t find a driver.  I didn’t even know that that was a possibility.  When they schedule a move, shouldn’t the driver be scheduled too?  Mayflower is paying us $125 everyday that our stuff isn’t here and they don’t seem too concerned.  They’ve basically told us that our stuff will get here when it gets here.  So, we wait.  I’m not very happy with Mayflower right now.

BUT

We haven’t let it slow us down.  My sister let us borrow 2 arm chairs and a table with 4 chairs.  We bought a picnic table for outside and we’re having a good time “camping out”.  I was wondering today if we really even needed our 5,000 pounds of stuff?  We do, of course, but it hasn’t been that bad. We have each other, family, and friends-it’s all we really need.

Buy My House!

June 29th, 2010 — 9:38am

As you saw yesterday our house went up for sale on Friday.

IMG_6662

We had our first open house on Sunday and it went really well. About 25 groups came in to look at it, meaning that about 50 people saw it.  There seemed to be a lot of interest and numerous people asked for a disclosure packet.  The broker’s tour is today and we’ll know more information after that.  I’m eagerly awaiting the call about how that goes!

The overall feeling of most everyone that walked into our unit was that they didn’t expect it to be so nice.  We put A TON of work into our house.  When we moved in, it was straight out of 1978.  White tile with brown grout, original vinyl flooring, brown cabinets….we even had a brown ROTARY phone in the kitchen!  Insane. We completely remodeled the kitchen, put in wood flooring (it was carpet), remodeled the guest bathroom, and painted almost every room.

What do you think? I apologize for the not so great quality of the pictures-they are from my realtors website.  I really should ask her for the originals.

It was a good house.  I’m proud of what we did with it and I hope we find a buyer who will love it as much as we did.

Whata week!

June 28th, 2010 — 1:40pm

I’m going to try and recap the last week of my life.  I feel like a month has gone by!

We started last week with Lu and Mommy going to Vietnamese for a little date.  Lu decided that she loves everything Vietnamese!

IMG_6656

My brother-in-law and nephew left.  And then we said goodbye at daycare :(  It was very emotional.  I gave each of Lucy’s main teachers a keychain with her picture and all her teachers got thank you cards and giftcards to Starbucks.  They cried, I cried, it was the worst part of moving :(.

On Friday, the movers came and made short order of our house!

image

image

IMG_6662

And as you can see, the For Sale sign went up on our house!

We then hit the road! Shaun in his Element with the bird and tons of boxes and me with Lucy, the kitty, and tons of boxes.  We left the Bay Area around 3:45 and didn’t get to our overnight stop until 12:45. NINE hours in the car.  Everyone did great, although Lu woke up around 11:45 PM and didn’t go back to sleep until about 1:30 AM.  Here she is at 12:45 in the hotel room:

image

That next morning we slept in until about 9:45, got breakfast and then hit the road.  The desserts desert of Nevada are surprisingly beautiful!

image

As was Oregon!

image

And then we hit Idaho!

image

Those are pictures taken with my camera as I was driving.  It was pretty desolate and a VERY straight road.  It was gorgeous but a bit tedious.  Lu wasn’t such a happy camper.  She did pretty well but had about a 45 minute crying streak before we got to the ONLY town to stop in (there was literally nothing for hundreds of miles).  And then she cried a bit right as we were driving into Boise.  She promptly fell asleep (for the first time of the day) right as we hit Boise city limits.

We left Winnemucca at 10:30 and got to Boise around 4:30.  Minus one hour for the time change and it was 5 hours in the car.  MUCH more manageable than the 9 hours the night before.

We were finally home!

image

I walked into the house to find this:

IMG_6669

and this:

IMG_6672

and this:

IMG_6673

Courtesy of my Mom and sister.  It was a nice way to be welcomed home.  My brother-in-law also mowed the lawn for us and his mom (who lives here) planted us 3 planters full of beautiful flowers.  I thought I had taken pictures but evidently not.  I’ll get to that 😉

Oh and of course my sister left the infamous bears!

IMG_6668

These bears are so not my thing and so my sister torments me with them whenever she can.  I’ve come to embrace them 😉

We have an empty house, with just the essentials-food, a pack n’ play for Lu, and a blow up bed for Shaun and I and THAT’S it.

We’ve been spending a lot of time at my sister’s and having picnics on the balcony.

image

Our stuff should be here by Friday and I can’t wait!!!

Bloggy Friends

June 21st, 2010 — 3:35pm

One of the things that is so great about having a blog, is all the amazing people that you get to meet.  I met up with 2 in the past 4 days.

Lynn of The Actor’s Diet was in the Bay Area for a shoot and it turns out that she was staying only 10 minutes away.  We arranged to meet for drinks late Friday night and it was FABULOUS!

image

It was like reconnecting with an old friend.  We could have spent the whole night talking but cut our night “short” at midnight as Lynn had lines to memorize and I had guests to entertain.

Today, I drove over to Jill’s house for lunch and to meet the sweet Isabella. We met once before about a month before Isabella made her debut.  I’m so glad I was able to make it work to actually meet Isabella.  We went to Jill’s Whole Foods (the biggest and best one I have ever seen) and had a nummy lunch.

How cute is she?

IMG_6649

She was in a dress!

IMG_6651

A dark (but sweet!) picture.

IMG_6650

How amazing is she?!?!?!

This weekend we took my BIL and nephew to the California Academy of Sciences.  If you’re ever in the Bay Area I HIGHLY recommend visiting this museum.  It’s amazing.

Lu LOVED touching the stuff in the tide pools.

IMG_6619 IMG_6616 IMG_6617 IMG_6618

There were awesome Jellyfish (I love Jellyfish).

IMG_6630

This was a big round tank and Shaun wanted me to take a picture THROUGH the tank.

IMG_6631

My BIL has his eyes closed but this is a cute (but dark) picture of us.

IMG_6640

There were awesome “fishies!”

IMG_6607

Alien froggies:

IMG_6626

Snakes:

IMG_6636

An albino alligator (Yes this guy is real):

IMG_6641

And a low water garden on the roof!  The roof is the garden.

IMG_6643

Here are skylights into the rain forest:

IMG_6642

It was a nice way to spend our last Sunday in the area and Father’s Day.

I hope you had a great Father’s Day!
